It s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is back and it is still as good as ever. The story is simple, it s Halloween, and the Peanuts gang is getting ready to go trick or treating...except Linus. Linus is convinced that the Great Pumpkin will come down and show itself in the most sincere pumpkin patch in the world, and then distribute gifts to little boys and girls. He then stakes out the pumpkin patch (with Charlie Brown s little sister, Sally) and foregoes the treats. The cartoon looks really good in Blu-ray except for the closing scene which shows its age.
This is a great cartoon to play in the lead up to Halloween. My kids sat down and were transfixed by the unique music (great jazz from Vince Guaraldi), the bright colours, and the different characters. They really appreciated the Peanuts gang for their simplicity, and directness. This animated special originally came out in 1966 - and has really stood the test of time. Watching as an adult, I caught a lot more of the jokes than I had when I was younger - nice that it was as much for us big kids as the little ones.
The superstar of the cartoon, as far as my kids were concerned, was (of course) Snoopy. They were laughing non-stop when the "Flying Ace" gave his emotional interpretation of Schroeder s piano playing. What a great demonstration of the power of music.
This Charlie Brown Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack has a bonus episode, It s Magic Charlie Brown - which was another hit with my family! Snoopy finds a magic book at the library and turns Charlie Brown invisible. (Charlie Brown finally gets to kick the football!!!) My kids liked this episode as much as the first, and because of the magic, it has a nice tie in to Halloween.
Again, this is a great cartoon DVD Blu-ray combo set for kids of any age. Parents (and even grandparents) will enjoy sitting down with their kids, and watching this show as a family.
