Stargate Atlantis has a lot of things going for it from the start. It is a spin off from one of the most successful science fiction series of all times – Stargate SG1. The special effects have been honed over the years and the dialing mechanism for the Stargate has sped up. The know it all Canadian character is so smug, self assured and confident in his own superiority over everyone else that he could be the poster child for how Canadians see themselves.
The plot in a nutshell: The Ancients, the greatest race the universe has ever known, abandoned Earth millions of years ago, taking Atlantis with them; they then sunk the entire city in order to escape the clutches of the dreaded Wraith, an implacable bunch of villains who nourish themselves by sucking the life from humans. Now, as the two-hour "Rising" pilot details, a new team has gained access to the legendary city. Once they arrive, Atlantis loses the power to sustain its protective shield and rises to the surface, and thus begin the team's adventures.
In addition to dodging the Wraith the new Stargate team has to deal with the citizen worlds of the Pegasus galaxy who have all come to terms in their own way with the Wraith threat and are bent on pursuing their strategies regardless of what the Johnny come lately humans might have planned. There are some very good story arcs in this series which develop early and rapidly. The story telling is very good with the characters developing quickly. The rough edges which we often see at the beginning of a series are few and far between in Stargate Atlantis.
A big component to the success of Stargate Atlantis are the Wraiths. The Wraiths are the coolest, smartest and most well dressed bad guys the Stargate crowd have ever encountered. They are vampires with a twist – they don’t live off of human blood they suck the life force out of people with their hands. This does pose the question as to why they have mouths filled with razor sharp teeth but it’s best left unanswered for the moment. Maybe they will have a use for those teeth in the future. This was a brilliant first season for Stargate Atlantis with this 5 disc DVD set being a must have for SG fans. The bonus features include commentaries from the various stars, photo galleries and interviews. All the extras are enjoyable viewing and as an added bonus someone in the packaging department was awake when they were putting together the boxed set and it is only roughly the thickness of 1.5 DVD cases.
