This MGM Award Series Double Feature combines two movies who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Coen Brothers won for Fargo, a very quirky, black crime comedy; Callie Khouri won for Thelma & Louise, directed by Ridley Scott. The latter is story of two women on a road trip that goes wrong. Of the two movies in this two DVD set, Fargo has aged much better.
Thelma & Louise stars Susan Sarandon (Louise) and Geena Davis (Thelma), two girlfriends who decide to go for a weekend at the cottage. When a cowboy tries to rape Thelma, Louise kills him. The police, a good performance by Harvey Keitel go after the two women. They also pick up cute hitchhiker hunk Brad Pitt for a while.
This is a good movie with a good story and solid actresses, but there is something dated about it either in the direction or pacing or men are scum bit. The dated part is certainly not the story of two women who must affirm themselves in a man’s world. It is also a bit long at 129 minutes. The Thelma & Louise DVD in this set comes with commentary tracks by Ridley Scott and one with Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis.
Fargo, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, is a wonderfully dark murder comedy with Frances McDormand as the cop and William H. Macy as the embezzling car salesman who hires two inept thugs to kidnap his wife so he can fake a ransom and cover his theft. Of course things go really, really wrong and, this being a Coen Brothers movie, very weird.
The Fargo DVD in this MGM Award Series Double Feature comes in a 2-sided version with widescreen and full screen but no goodies.
