Horror movie fans always have an axe to grind as to which period featured the best films. 1986’s Night of the Creeps fits into my personal golden age of horror movies when special effect technology was good enough to support a good scary movie without being so good as to mask a bad script or director or becoming the point of the movie itself. Night of the Creeps Blu-ray has a few cool special features including a trivia track.
Fred Dekker described Night of the Creeps as a stew of alien invasion, horror, teen romance, buddy, cop thriller, and zombie movies. This is its strength and also its weakness. It is great fun but a bit messy and slow.
Night of the Creeps (Director’s Cut) opens with an alien unloading a tube into space. Cut to 1959 black and white scene where college boy Johnny finds tube and a slug from the tube jumps down his throat while his girlfriend meets a guy with fire axe. Cut to Pledge Week 1986 where best pals Chris and JC are trying to hook up with some sorority girls. Chris falls in love with one of them and long story short accidentally thaws Johnny. Johnny goes back to sorority house and unleashes a bunch of slugs.
This horror Blu-ray still works more than twenty years later. First time director Fred Dekker knows what buttons to push and his timing is excellent. He also manages to use conventional horror film tricks and put a new twist on a few. Dekker also has a good ear for a funny line and this puts this movie above the rest.
Horror movie fans will enjoy the many references to the genre in Night of the Creeps such as Corman University and so on.
Special features on the Night of the Creeps Blu-ray include commentary track with Fred Dekker, cast commentary, original theatrical ending, deleted scenes, a making of, Tom Atkins Man of Action, trivia track, and original trailer.
