If you like biography movies or movies about music Walk the Line Blu-ray is excellent. This movie about Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash follows the biopic formula of a short bit about the main character’s childhood, his or her early days, and rapidly embarks on the main story. Walk the Line also features lots of musical numbers but here Phoenix and Witherspoon do their own singing; this adds a lot to the credibility of the movie. You do not have to like country music to enjoy this biopic but it helps.
Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress for her take on June Carter Cash, Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Best Actor, and Walk the Line was also nominated for many other awards. It is easy to see why. The movie also features a who’s who of late fifties and early sixties American music as Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley were part of the Sun Music tours that included Johnny Cash.
Walk the Line mostly focuses on Johnny Cash’s side of the story until he and June Carter get married. Witherspoon makes June so interesting I really wished more had been told about her.
Director James Mangold decided to have the songs Johnny Cash and June Carter sing and sing together sometimes reveal what was going on between them. It is an interesting choice that works but asks the viewer to pay attention to the lyrics and especially the chemistry between Phoenix and Witherspoon.
Look for Robert Patrick (the liquid Terminator) as Cash’s father.
